South Orange Historical Preservation Society
For more than 20 years, The South Orange Historical Preservations Society (SOHPS) has sought to inform and involve the people of South Orange, New Jersey, to help preserve the historical buildings of the area. SOHPS’s aim is to further the study of the history and architecture of the Village of South Orange, through providing information and advice to individuals and businesses within the area on how to live and work within an area of historic architectural importance.
SOHPS has for a number of years supported the recognition of landmark buildings and historical neighbourhoods. By providing information and expertise in the area of preservation, SOHPS supports the renovation and rehabilitation of property, rather than abandonment or demolition. Included within this work have been a number of programmes, including the restoration of the old Fire Station and working with Nancy Heins-Glaser on the South Orange movie, “Once Upon a Gaslight.” Current projects include the renovation of the Old Stone House, the home of local businessman and philanthropist William Augustus Brewer, Jr.
